On the plus side, I have done some landscaping before, including pulling out weeds, and laying out compost, plus mulching - But don't have too much experience on the 'Green' side of things such as planting, watering, etc. I have included an image in this post for 'inspiration' - but as a beginner gardener, am I being a bit ambitious with this project? Also I'm happy to keep it watered as I know ferns love the moisture. once this is finished, I want to plant some Hardy Ferns (again not sure what type I should try to plant), the good thing is this area is very shady, which I read Ferns love. Here are some tips for successful fall planting of ferns: Timing: Plan to plant your ferns in early fall, when the weather starts to cool down and the intense heat of summer has passed. If your plant is of moderate size, it can be pruned back and kept whole. Planting in the fall allows ferns to establish their root systems before the onset of winter, giving them a head start for the next growing season. You can find different Japanese Painted ferns to grow in your garden. When planting your ferns, consider the hardiness zones, as these perennials survive outdoors in zones 5-8. So large, in fact, that at full size, they can be nearly impossible to find space for indoors. The Painted Lady Fern reaches up to two feet tall and wide, making it ideal for the landscape to control or grow in containers. Ferns can can certainly grow quite large through the warm summer months. and then some 140-170cm in width, so quite a large area to coverĪs I don't have experience planting, looking after, or dealing with Ferns, and I'm also UK based, I was just wondering whether something like this is sustainable?
